Possible complications include: • pain during procedure (possibly intense) • bladder injury • bowel injury • uterine injury • hemorrhaging (profuse bleeding) • serious infection • laceration(or tearing) of the cervix (the womb's opening) • puncture or tear of the womb itself • inflammation of the reproductive organs • menstrual problems • death
Emotional complications
• recurrent dreams of abortion experience • guilt • depression • flashbacks (including memories of the sounds & smells during the abortion procedure) • feelings of detachment from others • suicidal thoughts or actions • increased drug or alcohol use • lack of interest in sex • heartache at the sight of other children • haunting memories on due date and abortion date • relationship problems (couples often break up after the abortion)
Potential problems with future pregnancies after having an abortion:
• tubal (ectopic) pregnancy • difficulty becoming pregnant again • significantly higher chance of miscarriages • premature births • more likely to have birth defects • placenta previa • sterility
